AppliedTrust Staff Co-Authors UNIX and Linux System Administration Handbook, Fourth Edition

BOULDER, Colo. -- [July 19, 2010] -- AppliedTrust staff members Trent R. Hein, Ned McClain, Evi Nemeth, Ben Whaley, and Terry Morreale, have teamed with other industry experts to co-author the fourth edition of UNIX and Linux System Administration Handbook.
 
The 20th anniversary edition of the handbook merges UNIX and Linux content back together and covers Red Hat Enterprise Linux, openSUSE, Ubuntu, Solaris/OpenSolaris 11, HP-UX and AIX 6.1. It also includes new topics such as virtualization, cloud computing, scripting, modern security and Green IT, and provides updates to the original material that initially earned this book the reputation as the “bible” of system administration.
 
Hein, co-founder, CEO and president of AppliedTrust, has co-authored the second, third and fourth editions of the handbook as well as both editions of Linux Administration Handbook. He is one of the country’s leading UNIX, Linux and digital security experts and is highly respected for the real-world engineering projects he has executed during his career. He began his career at the Computer Systems Research Group of the University of California at Berkeley, where his work earned him a listing as a “Major Contributor” on the Lifetime Achievement Award presented to the group by the USENIX Association. He has won numerous technical awards and was a developer of the BSD/OS Internet serving operating system. Additionally, he is a 10-year Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE-10 #1941), Cisco’s highest level of technical certification. Hein is also a regular speaker at national technical conferences and has authored numerous articles and white papers.

McClain, co-founder and CTO of AppliedTrust, has been working with UNIX, TCP/IP networks and the Internet since 1992. He is a contributing author to both the third edition of the UNIX System Administration Handbook and both editions of Linux Administration Handbook. McClain often lectures about various system administration and security topics at technical conferences such as USENIX in the United States and APRICOT in Asia. McClain was a part of C/NRG (Cornell University/Network Research Group) while earning a Computer Science degree in the College of Engineering.

Nemeth, former Computer Science faculty at the University of Colorado, has co-authored all editions of UNIX System Administration Handbook and Linux Administration Handbook. She is best known in mathematical circles for originally identifying inadequacies in the “Diffie-Hellman trap,” the basis for a large portion of modern network cryptography.
 
“It was a lot of work, but we’re proud to have pulled off another edition of what we hope will continue to be the go-to reference for sysadmins everywhere,” said Nemeth.
 
Whaley is Director of Enterprise Architecture at AppliedTrust, where he focuses on enterprise architecture, application security, UNIX and Linux systems and performance tuning. He is a frequent contributor to the AppliedTrust blog, The Barking Seal, and has contributed articles to (IN)SECURE Magazine and NetworkWorld.com.

Morreale, Applied Trust’s Director of Client Services, began her technical career at U.S. West Advanced Technologies, where she was the lead engineer for what eventually became the Qwest (formerly U.S. West Communications) dialup Internet access service, and she was also a product engineer on the MegaBit Services Project, Qwest's original DSL product offering. After Qwest, Morreale worked in Technology Intelligence at MediaOne, and then as a consultant for the Gartner Group and Kalos Strategy Group, before joining AppliedTrust in 2005. At AppliedTrust, she focuses on incident management, standards compliance and helping clients integrate information security best practices into their organization.

As with previous versions, the book provides a practical approach for both the novice administrator and the seasoned professional and is divided into three main sections: basic administration, networking and everything else.
 
UNIX System Administration Handbookwas first released in 1989, with the second edition released in 1995 and the third edition in 2000. It has been translated into at least 16 languages. Linux Administration Handbook first released in 2002 with the second edition released in 2006, has been translated into at least nine languages.
 
The book’s release date is July 19, 2010. Other authors include Garth Snyder, Ron Jachim, David Schweikert and Tobi Oetiker.
