Applied Trust has been producing The Barking Seal for our clients, supporters, and friends since 2003.
One of the greatest features of being consulting IT infrastructure engineers is that we have the opportunity to see, touch, and experience a wide variety of technologies and their successful (and sometimes, not so successful) application. We have the opportunity to solve problems that have never been solved before. And, every once in awhile, we make mistakes that provide good lessons. It's our hope that sharing some of these experiences will better our community as a whole. We hope you enjoy it!!

Nothing says summer like grilling. Or, barbecuing as they call it in England, because the "proper" name for broiling is actually grilling, and they're fundamentally different cooking methods. We really have no need for "true" barbecue, because everyone knows most of the food is just boiled anyway. But I digress......

Last week I found a long-forgotten, almost empty bag of bread in the back of my pantry. Some bizarre reaction had resulted in the mold hardening and warping the plastic, which left an oily residue on my fingers as I rapidly flung it across the kitchen into my rubbish bin. In a perfectly natural comparative leap, I...

I get it. As a device management utility, Telnet needs to go away. I guess that’s why, starting with Server 2008 and Vista, Microsoft decided to stop installing Telnet by default on its operating systems. While the little white angel on my shoulder says, “Great! One less insecure protocol to worry about,” the little...

I find one of the more handy and versatile tools in my system administration toolkit to be the GNU "date" command. Now obviously it's no "top" or anything; it's not that date provides any crucial functionality, exactly. Instead, it's that it provides some very handy glue that can be used in a wide variety of...

This morning, Ned, Paul, and I watched the live video stream from the Number Resource Organization (NRO) as the last 5 IPv4 blocks were allocated to regional registries (AFRINIC, APNIC, ARIN, LACNIC, RIPE). This is the dawn of the IPocalypse (as predicted) and will radically change our IT world from here forward. It...
