AppliedTrust is on the hunt for an individual to fill a lead architect role focused on growing and leading our Drupal practice. The ideal candidate will have a strong grounding in computer science and experience in the software development field showing progressively more responsibility, likely with at least 4-5 years of experience.
As an architect, you’ll help design and implement systems to meet the business needs of companies across all major industry verticals. This role isn’t a good fit for someone who just loves building flashy brochure sites, but is perfect for someone who enjoys using Drupal to solve tough business problems while helping customers recognize the value that opensource tools like Drupal can provide. As well as solving tough problems, you’ll grow AppliedTrust’s internal development practice methodology, lead teams on projects of varying size, and apply structured, thought out techniques to addressing customer needs. The ability work in teams as well as lead teams while using release management and SDLC approaches you will help institute will be essential.
The right person might be in a leadership role now, or looking for a new challenge and on the cusp of becoming this leadership figure. In this lead architect role, formal design experience and expert level PHP skills are essential, though the position does not require expert-level Drupal experience from day one (though that would be advantageous). An active or emerging presence in the Drupal community would be ideal (or a history of supporting the opensource community in some form); Drupal community outreach and contribution will be a key responsibility of this role. Blogging, speaking and “giving back” will be just some of the fun responsibilities this position entails along with continuing AppliedTrust’s tradition of supporting the Drupal community at camps, cons and user groups.
AppliedTrust also recognizes that when development and operations groups work closely, the end results a more harmonious outcome than the traditional two camp approach (check out DevOps Boulder!) With a proven history providing operations related services in the Infrastructure and Security realms, you’ll have the support of an amazing team as we all work to ensure that solutions we’re providing are manageable, maintainable and based on best practices from the development and operations realms. Without question, the right fit for this position is going to love development, but they’ll also not be shy admitting that debugging MySQL replication issues or kernel panics also holds an undeniable appeal (oh yeah baby!)
On top of the huge array of opportunities this positions presents, AppliedTrust offers an AMAZING benefits package, including over four weeks of PTO for new team members (21 days per year) plus additional paid company holidays, a 401(k) program with 100% company match on 4% of salary, Health (PPO), Dental, and Life/AD&D/LTD insurance with 100% of employee premiums paid for by AppliedTrust, a $500 annual ski-pass benefit and a $750 annual HRA account contribution to name just a few. On top of those benefits, we recognize that this position requires a special person, and can offer a very competitive salary along with a signing bonus in order to get that special person.
While this position requires the core skills and interests outlined above, there’s a great deal of scope for the individual to help define and grow this role and set their own path. We do think that there are some baseline characteristics and responsibilities of this position though, which include:
- Passion about generating visibility and sharing knowledge and opinions with the world - community contribution is a big part of this position
- Continually building a strong understanding of eCommerce solutions like Drupal Commerce
- Ability to create detailed architectural documentation relating to work (planned and performed)
- Provisioning and supporting production services in an enterprise environment desirable
- Providing technical leadership relating to Drupal projects from inception to delivery
- Serving as a "humble expert" and interacting with customers with varied technical backgrounds
- Ability to articulate how Drupal can meet Enterprise Application needs in businesses today (you might find yourself with a salesperson hat on from time to time!)
- Addiction to best practice release management methods and other key concepts (SDLC, secure coding practices)
- Experience working in teams, and a willingness to mentor, support and lead less experienced Engineers with varying levels of Drupal experience.
- Like any technology leadership role, exceptional communication skills, time management, critical thinking and attention to detail are critical!
This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who wants to join an amazing team that is passionate about technology and having fun doing what they love.
